we know about the time line of how the events unfolded. back in early june the fbi began investigating what it-described as menacing e-mails sent anonymously to a woman close to petraeus. well, the e-mails allegedly came from paula broadwell who the fbi later discovered was having an affair with the cia director. well, the fbi wrapped its investigation on november 2nd after it interviewed petraeus and broadwell. but "the new york times" reports the fbi concluded there was no evidence petraeus committed any crime or breached any security problem. on election day the fbi notified james clapper, he's the director of national intelligence, about the investigation. the next day he told people in the white house. that was clapper. but the president wasn't informed until the following day, november 8th. lawmakers have expressed anger they weren't informed earlier about the investigation. here is dianne feinstein who chairs the senate intelligence committee today. >> this thing just came so fast and so hard and since then it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel co
questionable e-mails from paula broadwell. the fbi's investigation into those e-mails eventually revealed broadwell's affair with general petraeus which eventually led to petraeus' resignation. remember her fbi friend that started the investigation? turns out he was also the person who called house majority leader eric cantor and told him what he knew. one more character connecting petraeus and allen in this messy web, jill's twin sister natalie, just weeks ago both generals wrote letters in support of natalie in a custody battle over her four-year-old son. "the washington post" is now reporting according to advisers close to petraeus, petraeus only resigned after national intelligence director james clapper told him to do so. joining me now, spencer ackerman, senior writer for "wired" who writes for their national security blog, the danger room, and nbc's richard wolffe. richard, i don't know, i don't know much about waging war. i do know a little bit about living life. and these generals are writing absolutely crazy letters which i don't have time to read to a judge in a custody battle.

. and warning her to stay away from petraeus. ultimately will the fbi traced the e-mails back to petraeus' biography paula broadwell. and during the investigation, they discovered e-mails from pa tray to us broadwell that showed the two were having an extramarital affair. there's still a lot we don't know about the petraeus resignation. why would paula broadwell send threatening e-mails to jill kelley? did broadwell have access to confidential information? while there are legitimate questions that need to be answered, some on the right are back to their old tricks trying to turn this into something it's not. >> this is an administration that is practicing now serial deception. this is a very convenient way to get the administration out of a very, very difficult situation. but this is inevitable. it's like water gate. >> it's been going on for several months and now they're appearing that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. just doesn't add up. >> i would suggest that we have a joint swleelect committee of house and senate members, not do this toge
folks from the cia, the fbi, the national intelligence office and they are learning some of the time line. we are told they're getting a sense of what was known, and why did this whole controversy bubble up about a video, a spontaneous protest or an intentional act of terror, which is such a part of the political dynamic here. what we hear from members who were in the earlier briefing, the senate briefing is happening right now, is that there was a difference in the nature of the attacks. the first wave of the attack appeared more chaotic. the second attack went on over a period of seven hours appeared far more coordinated with command and control, the ability to bring weaponry, things like that, that cause some of this unease about how to decide who was behind it and what was going on. when you talk about frustrations, there are those political frustrations but also a lot of frustrations here about wanting to get to the bottom of it to know what happened, why chris stevens, the ambassador, his pleas for additional security, his warnings about dangers in the area may not have been ad
ago, while the fbi investigation was going on, both general petraeus and cia director and general allen and as commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan, within two days of each other, write letters vouching for the sister of jill kelley saying she deserves more time with her son. a judge had placed very strict limits on her visitation with her own son after awarding custody to her ex-husband. the judge had found -- the judge had found, and i quote, that jill kelley's sister has extreme personal deficits in the areas of honesty and integrity. that was in a court ruling in november of 2011. and then in september of 2012 the director of the cia is writing a letter vouching for -- >> so, the judge has this assessment of jill's -- >> jill kelley's sister. >> right, right. >> and then general petraeus, as districter of the cia and general allen both wrote letters this past september on behalf of this sister as a favor to jill kelley? >> well, we can presume as a favor to jill kelley, general petraeus, then-cia director petraeus referenced spending time with the sister and her son, young
